GOK Projects Part 2- National Agricultural Rural Inclusive Growth Project
An overview of GOK sponsored National Agricultural Rural Inclusive Growth Project (NARIGP)

This project is implemented by GOK with financing from the world bank in 21 counties namely the arid areas of Turkana and Samburu; semi-arid areas of Makueni, Kitui, Embu, Meru, Kwale, and Narok; and medium to high rainfall areas in Kirinyaga, Kiambu, Murang’a, Nakuru, Bungoma, Trans Nzoia, Nandi, Vihiga, Kisii, Migori, Nyamira and Homa Bay.

The core objective of the project is captured in its Project Development Objective (PDO) which poses that the aim of the project is to increase agricultural productivity and profitability of targeted rural communities in selected Counties, and in the event of an Eligible Crisis or Emergency, to provide immediate and effective response.

The project has four components namely supporting community driven development, strengthening producer organizations, supporting county community led development and project coordination and management. The first component is split down into two subcomponents namely strengthening community level institutions by facilitating participatory integrated community development process when identifying priority value chains, development of standardized training modules, payment to selected advisors to offer technical and extension advisory services and facilitating county technical departments to provide oversight; and supporting community investments in SLM interventions, market oriented alternative livelihoods interventions, support for vulnerable and marginalized groups and nutrition mainstreaming. The second component on strengthening producer organizations is further split into two subcomponents namely strengthening producer organizations and value chain development. The third component on supporting county community led development has two components namely capacity building of counties and county investment and employment programs. Lastly, the final component is concerned with project coordination and monitoring and evaluation.

The project is managed at the national and county levels. Starting from the top, the National Project Steering Committee coordinates the project nationally through the National Project Coordination unit, while receiving advise from the National Technical Advisory Committee. At the county level, the County Project Coordination Unit, which reports to the National Project Coordination Unit coordinates the project under supervision from the County Project Steering Committee and while receiving advisory services from the County Technical Advisory Committee.

The project is financed by the Government of Kenya (GOK) and the World Bank
